Info Camp - General

The HATC, High Altitude Training Centre, was founded by the Elite Athlete Lornah Kiplagat in 1999. The HATC was officially opened in November 2000 by Mr. Kipchoge ‘Kip’ Keino, member of International Olympic Committee, and chairman of Kenyan Olympic Committee.

Lornah’s vision of the HATC was to provide a training centre for young talented Kenyan female athletes. The HATC aims to give these athletes the opportunity to establish a career in running, and work simultaneously on their academic skills.

This unique venture is extremely essential in a country like Kenya that offers scant opportunity for female athletes in a male dominated society. The HATC is now one of few places where these girls can train and live under the most ideal conditions.

The HATC welcomes every athlete, be they elite or recreational, Kenyan or foreign. The centre has become a recognized cultural gathering place in the Great Rift Valley where many foreigners have come to enjoy the warm hospitality and immense athletic opportunities offered of living in a European styled camp with the renowned elite Kenyan athletes.

The HATC lies at an altitude of 2400 meters (8000 ft) deemed to be perfect for distance running… There are literally hundreds of miles of dirt roads, hills, and trails for running. There is also a 400 meter track within a couple of kilometers of the camp, and the famed running village of Iten is a ten minute stroll down the road.

Besides runners the secure and peaceful camp also hosts mountain-bikers and people who are just traveling through Kenya to experience one of the world’s most beautiful unspoiled regions. People who want to experience the real Africa!
